Loved your thoughts on the matter BUT I can't help but wonder how much truth there is to the IDF having advanced knowledge of the attack and let it happen, Pearl Harbor or 9/11 style.
We're always left with a choice to choose what we want to believe and fight over who's right and who's wrong.

I may suspect Israel is or is not an innocent victim but I hold no firm belief in either; only a curiosity for the truth which we'll likely never know.

Oh, I'm am not suggesting, nor am I aware of any credible intelligence which suggests the IDF knew of the attack ahead of time.  I don't think they did know.  I think the events of Oct 7th were a straight-up hamas led terrorist attack on Israel.  A murderous and evil attack by the Islamic terrorist organization hamas, likely in concert with assistance from Iran's hezbollah.

Israel had every right to retaliate for the attacks, make no mistake about that.  At issue is the degree of the retaliation, hence my statement about the actions cancelling each other out and thus being the outlier.  That's all.  No, I think the attack on Israel was an absolute surprise terrorist attack by hamas.
