The 'mudpit' refers to our current state of politics and not the site, but we do indeed have a 'mudpit' forum just like the old days but with a new perspective.

Yeah it got pretty silly over there in the pit.  I think the trolls ruined the pit more than the people that may have had differences.   I was on ATS for 20 years and in the old days many had differences but for the most part controversial topics were still discussed civilly.  Unfortunately that’s hardly the case nowadays.
