In hindsight, my using Scotch whisky as an example was a poor choice. In the back of my mind were the teetotallers and anti smoking lobby.
I saw a BBC documentary on life in seventeenth century England. A part of life of the labourer then apparently was lots of beer, and even the dregs of the barrel was served on porridge in the morning. Beer was food in those days. When the teetotallers convinced the people that tea and coffee were fashionable, it caused nationwide vitamin deficiencies.
Tobacco has herbal healing properties, and was originally the providence of the apothecary in Britain. The (controversial) reports of low rate of Covid infection in smokers, for example. Menthol cigarettes too.
I think there is often a downside when something disappears, maybe even 4chan. If Facebook disappeared, half of western society would probably have a nervous breakdown and end up on antidepressants.
Pandora has a lot of explaining to do.
