"Hudson River Helicopter Crash video shows that the rotor blades were fully detached from the fuselage but still spinning."
Very interesting! Not a blade de-lamination either, as the blades both look fully intact and not deformed. Also not a "Jesus nut" failure either, because then you'd only see the rotor itself with no main shaft or pieces below it. No, this is beginning to look like a massive transmission failure. Judging from the picture, it looks like the main drive gear is still attached. In order for this to come free the whole transmission basically would have needed to explode. WOW! Well, my original theories are kaput.
Now I'm wondering how the tail boom got severed. I guess a complete rotor separation, with a full intact rotor assembly, could cause the same thing as a severed rotor.
Seeing this new picture makes me frustrated that the helicopter didn't have a CVR or FDR. There were definitely indications of a major failure before the event. Must have been some serious banging and grinding, gears breaking, etc. to lead to that kind of a failure! I don't think I've seen anything like that before. Maybe a first for Bell too.
