On another note, people are reporting that the email system is fixed on ATS. New members are joining and posting. I'm going to pass myself. This has gotten way out of hand....

Being too eager to dance on the grave of ATS for clicks, with a prepared tribute, may have been too tempting for fate to resist. Or... maybe it was just a ghost. ![]()

It’s down again! Error 522 (timeout) as reported by Cloudfare. The site isn’t responding so I wonder what the issue is this time. There’s something about this time of year that comes to mind. Certificate expiring, domain expiring or who knows what, I can’t remember the details.
I thought ATS had someone looking after it again. Let’s see if anyone comes to the rescue today.

Yeah, it has been down for over an hour now, and won't connect to the host. Well, since around 8 AM Eastern time. Connection timed out Error code 522.

The site owner went AWOL more than a year ago and NONE of the mods have access to the backend to fix or change anything, yet functions that have been broken for years suddenly work. I guess we can assume there are some benevolent hackers out there who are looking out for members' best interests and keeping the site online.
Who has this kind of power, and why the secrecy? ![]()

It actually went down at 23:39 MDT last night. I was right in the middle of a reply, and when I hit "Reply", it hung up and 522'd. I'd made a post about 60 seconds before that which was successful, so that's pretty darn close to the moment it took place. So, just thinking about time stamps for a moment; this would have been 02:39 EDT or 06:39 ZULU (GMT). Neither of those two times are particularly notable for a policy action. What's interesting here is, it would have also been 11:39 MDT in Idaho also (where ATS is allegedly now based). That time COULD actually be relevant for a policy action if registrations are originated from ID, as it would be 20 minutes before Midnight (which is often the time policy actions are initiated). Don't know anything for certain, just pointing out some possibilities.

There was an old admin account that was active since the last crash. I don't know the story, but apparently somebody did have access that was adjacent to the mod team or on it. There was obviously a "benevolent" hacker before the last time it crashed, but that admin account came into play the last time. They also removed the mod status for some accounts, so there was more access than prior. I don't have a great deal of trust for anyone involved at this point. I doubt we'll ever get a straight story. Everything has to be a secret, even shit that people observed happening with their own eyes.

The cloning of ATS always struck me as part of some plan we're not suppoaed to be privy to, especially after reading about how/whp MPP came to be.

The Cloudfare response says:
“An Error 522 means that the request was able to connect to your web server, but that the request didn't finish. The most likely cause is that something on your server is hogging resources.” If we take that literally, I’d say we could rule out a certificate or domain registration expiration but it really depends on who the hosting provider is and how they deal with sites that haven’t paid their renewals. It could be that the site is being attacked (denial of service) to saturate the server but why would someone even bother doing that. I guess we wait and see just like every other time. |
