Vacuum Sealers

#1
We've had one of those Food Saver seal-a-meal vacuum food sealers for years.  It works 'okay', but I'm constantly fussing with it for one reason or another.  Having cattle, we do a LOT of packing of meats.  Between that and the game meat I get, the Food Saver has paid for itself 100x over.  But again, it has these little quirks which make me have to constantly mess with it in order to get it to do what I want it to.

For years I've looked at those more commercial chamber style vacuum sealers, but I never bought one because they are spen-dy ($$$$).  They're like 10x the cost of even one of the best consumer grade external sealers like the Food Saver.  Well, the other day the Food Saver got on my very last nerve...and I broke down and bought a commercial chamber sealer.  It showed up the other day, and it was an ordeal even getting it inside the house.  These things weigh like 80 lbs. and the shipping box was huge with all the protective packing (it was more like a crate).  I even had to buy a rolling cart to set this thing on because it's way too big to fit on the counter (else it would take up too much room).

So, I got it in, and got everything set up (which was not a 5 minute process).  Turned that bad-boy on and tried it out.  WOW!!  These things are incredible!  It's like 10,000% better than the old Food Saver.  I can adjust the vacuum level, the vacuum time, the sealing time and the cooling time.  After vacuum sealing something the bags are like rock hard.  The bags are way thicker, and not only that, they're cheaper too which is an unexpected bonus.  Plus, I learned I can vacuum seal the mylar type bags also (and there's another kind I forget the name of) like MRE bags.

With the Mylar bags and O2 absorbers they say food can potentially be stored for 25 years!  Not that I'd ever store food that long, but it's nice to know I can go crazy at Costco or Sam's Club now and not worry about waste.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.  I did bunch of research on vacuum sealing before buying this unit, so if anyone has any questions about vacuum sealing, I'll be glad to answer as best I can.

Yeah, we do like to be prepared also. I'm not sure we qualify as 'preppers' per-se, but we do keep a couple months worth of supplies on hand just in case.  I always figured we've got 'years' worth of good eats wandering around out in the pastures if it really came down to it.  But I do love the savings which can be had at places like Costco and Sam's Club by buying in bulk.   So, this vacuum sealer will definitely be nice for that.  I also like that it will seal multiple different kinds of bags which I'm still learning about.  It also has some sort of an external thingie for sealing the big ported clothing bags, but I haven't really figured that function out yet.  Heh, it works so dang good as it is I'm kinda' afraid to mess with it.  I'm still just in awe of how it seals things.  There is literally like zero air left inside bags when you take an item out of this thing.

It's kind of different how it works too.  It's not like the old food saver at all.  The food saver works by progressively evacuating all the air from the bag as it runs.  This thing runs for about 20 seconds and it doesn't look like anything is happening but the vacuum gauge is going up, then right at the end it sucks all the air out all at once in about one second.  Sounds like the air brakes releasing on a tractor trailer sort of when it works.

Funny you would mention freeze dryers because my wife was just talking about one of those the other day.  She was using our dehydrator to dry some oranges for orange drink mix (which is delicious, btw) and wondering if one of those would be faster than the several day process it takes to dehydrate something with our dehydrator.  I even went out and looked at a couple units online.  Those things ain't cheap either!!  And they weigh a ton like the vacuum sealer also.  I guess that's the difference with all these commercial devices, size and weight; they all have these big motors and pumps inside them.  I guess I never realized how big of a leap it is to step up from a higher end consumer-grade device to a lower end commercial-grade device.  I should have known better really.  Just like I can't go to Petco and buy cattle handling equipment.  The gap is huge.  You go immediately from something you can bring home in your trunk to something which needs to be delivered with a forklift.  There's no in between really.
